POST - OPERATIVE
INSTRUCTIONS
Each patient's post-operative instructions will be customized for their particular situation.
Bite on gauze for two hours without expectorating or rinsing. If the bleeding continues, bite on fresh, sterile gauze for an additional hour. Repeat if necessary.
Do not rinse or wash the mouth today; however, continue to maintain basic oral hygiene. Brush all nonsurgery areas. Tomorrow, soak with warm salt water 6 to 8 times per day. Do not swish. Avoid "sucking" actions such as with straws.
NO SMOKING for five days following surgery. It significantly impairs healing.
Eat and drink on the opposite side of the mouth for 24 hours, if possible, or as directed otherwise by Dr. Wells or his staff.
Swelling is not uncommon and need not cause alarm. To minimize, apply an ice bag, or a towel filled with cracked ice over the affected area as long as possible for the next 24 hours. Take only liquid nourishment while you are numb.
Mild to moderate discomfort may be experienced after the anesthetic wears off. Take the medication as prescribed for discomfort.
Keep petroleum jelly or similiar emollient applied to the lips regularly to prevent chafing.
If deemed appropriate a postoperative follow up appointment will be provided for you.
